McCulloch kart racing engines were manufactured by McCulloch Corporation between 1959 and 1977, during which time, these engines largely dominated the USA kart racing scene. McCulloch would shut down their chainsaw manufacturing line at least once a year to do a limited run of kart racing engines. The kart racing motors were based on the late 50′s and early 60′s production chainsaw engines, sharing components, castings. Some of the high performance parts like manifolds and carburetor were made by other companies, like Walbro, Reed Engineering, Azusa, etc… Some factory models include dual carburators, velocity stacks, V-Reeds, boost porting, … McCulloch generally offered a range of racing engines targeted for youth, stock adult, and modified adult class racing. The youth engines were typically lower rev’ing motors about 5hp, while the adult stock class motors were in the 10-17hp range. The adult class modified motors were said to be as high as 18-24hp, with some classes running two of those engines! These same engines now dominate the popular Vintage Karting scene at many events around the United States today. Anyone interested in vintage karting is encourage to visit the Vintage Karting Association website, or the Rear Engine American Racers site.
