In 1978, a racer’s dream occurred, that time when everything goes right for some unknown reason. At the end of the day at the 1978 Le Mans World Championships an American stood proudly on the winner podium.

While 1978 is outside the VKA guidelines for it’s recognized vintage karting period, Lake Speed’s championship win in 1978 is a significant accomplishment worthy of recognition. At the 2006 Quincy Vintage Kart Olympics, Lake Speed turned some laps in his historic 1978 World Championship kart (#68), photos from this day are featured in the gallery below.
