Tyrrell P34 at RM Motorsports – up close!

Tyrrell P34 - Patrick Depailler 1976

Tyrrell P34 - Patrick Depailler 1976

The Tyrrell P34 in this video is similar to the one driven by Patrick Depailler. The car has been restored and is maintained by RM Motorsports in Wixom, MI. Even though this car could be an accurate static museum piece, it is MUCH more …this is a fully functional and competitive car that is being actively raced at vintage racing events. The video was shot on location at the extensive RM Motorsports facility.

The Tyrrell P34 (Project 34) was originally built for the 1976 Formula One season. Conceived by Tyrrell’s chief designer Derek Gardner. It is one of the most recognizable race car designs of all time due to it’s unusual 6 wheels. The 4 front tires were specially made by Goodyear and mount on small 10 inch wheels. The design intent was to reduce frontal area with the smaller tires, therefore reducing drag.

Tyrrell team mates Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler put in a respectable 1976 season with their P34’s, with one win and several high place finishes. Goodyear’s failure to continually develop the small front tires, eventually made the car uncompetitive.

The 8th annual Vintage Kart Olympics was held September 10-12, 2009 at TNT Kartways, located on the West side of the Mississippi River from Quincy, IL. This event has continued to draw some of the best vintage karts and some very well known karter names from the past. Mark Dismore was given a key to the City of Quincy, by the Mayor himself during the Thursday night welcoming dinner ceremony.

This event was run using the guidelines established by the Vintage Karting Association (VKA). The VKA serves to create awareness and participation in vintage karting, for the purpose of preserving the history of karting. Growth and participation in vintage karting is accelerating, since it offers an alternative to modern kart racing. Vintage Karting is more low key and less aggressive than modern kart racing, participants are encouraged to respect each other with “no contact” non-aggressive on track driving. Vintage Karting also offers the unique aspect of restoration and show presentation.

Every year at the Vintage Kart Olympics, a Kart Show is held at the the City Centre Hotel (former Holiday Inn) Friday evening. This year, an exceptional group of Show Karts were on display. Visit the VKA website for hundreds of event photos and more videos…
